A look back

By Staff
Researched by Dr. Bill Stewart
The nation has been in mourning recently for the late President Ronald Reagan.
1984 -June 17, Area residents are looking forward to seeing President Reagan at next month's Spirit of America Festival in Decatur. (As many as 65,000 were able to hear the President.)
1939 -June 18, Several Ronald Reagan films are expected to be shown at the Strand in the near future, including "Going Places," "Secret Service of the Air," "Dark Victory," and "Angels Wash Their Faces."
1909 -June 19, Our Congressman Richardson has asked President Taft not to support an increase in the tariff. He is not optimistic, however-"The people have demanded downward revision of the tariff and they are going to get just the opposite."
1920 -June 20, Congressman Almon is now at his home in Tuscumbia where he will remain most of the time until Congress receonvenes in December. He anticipates an overwhelming Alabama victory for Democratic presidential candidate James Cox and vice-presidential nominee Franklin Roosevelt in the November election.
1934 -June 21, Lawrence F. Howell has been appointed acting postmaster of Moulton by President Roosevelt.
1974 -June 22, Hartselle plans to spend the money it is continuing to receive under the Nixon revenue sharing program as follows: public safety, $43,522; environmental protection, $32,000; and libraries, $8,500.
1888 -June 23, Hartselle Democrats are unanimous in support of the reelection of President Grover Cleveland. They are largely unfamiliar with the President's choice of former Senator Thurman of Ohio as his running mate but assume he is a good man.
1976 -June 23, Judge Guy Hunt of neighboring Cullman County is leading the effort to replace President Gerald Ford with former California Governor Ronald Reagan at the head of the GOP ticket when the national convention meets later this summer.
1983 -June 24, City leaders are in receipt of a telegram from President Ronald Reagan which will be read at tomorrow's dedication ceremonies for a memorial honoring Hartselle's war dead at the Sparkman Civic Center.
