Brewer high school took home both the boys and girls titles in the 2004 Morgan County Tournament Saturday night. It was the first time since Brewer accomplished the feat in 2000 that one school took home both titles.
Brewer boys 70, Falkville 57
The Patriots won the boys title Saturday night with a 70-57 win over the Falkville Blue Devils.
Brewer was lead by Dustin Scott's 22 points followed by Austin Mooney with 17. Matt Eslick added 14 and Matt Cobbs scored 11 giving the Patriots four double-digit scorers.
The title was the fourth for head coach Sam Brown. He also led the Patriots to county titles in 1997, 1999 and 2000.
Brewer led most of the night, opening as much as a 12-point lead. Falkville would begin to chip away at the lead in the second half. Ryan Summerford, who finished with 17 points to lead Falkville, scored 11 points in the second half to rally the Blue Devils.
Falkville pulled within three points at 54-51 with 4:46 left in the game. The Patriots responded with two straight buckets to push the lead to seven at 58-51.The Patriots then sank 13 of 14 free throws in the final three minutes to seal the title.
The win improved the Patriots record to 14-10 and was their fifth win in six games. Falkville slipped to 13-8 after making the county final for the first time in 29 years.
"I think we are playing pretty solid ball right now," Brewer head coach Sam Brown said. "We've have been playing really well in our last six games, but we might be reaching a peak right now."
Brown also had praise for the Blue Devils.
"They have a great club," Brown said. "They have some shooters that can cause problems for any defense. This was a fight all night."
Brewer girls 53, Hartselle 46
For the third year in a row and 10th time since 1990 Ricky Allen's squad won the girls county title. The 53-46 win avenged a 74-65 loss at Hartselle eight days earlier. Jessica Thompson led the Lady Patriots with 22 points, 10 of which came at the free throw line in the final two minutes of play. Brewer, who improved to 16-6 with the win, won despite having three players foul out of the contest.
Hartselle took the lead 44-43 when sophomore Shan Jones hit a base line jumper with just over two minutes to play. Thompson then was prefect on 10 shots from the charity stripe as Brewer clinched its third county title since 2002.
Allen had much praise for his star player.
"She's a great player, she stepped up when she had to," Allen said. "This is a great win, winning the county title never gets old."
Whitney Childers added 12 points for Brewer, while freshman Lauren Drake led Hartselle with 17.
The win snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Lady Tigers, who fell to 15-8 on the season.
Falkville boys 58, Hartselle 55
The Falkville Blue Devils reached the finals of the county tournament for the first time in 29 years with semi-final win over the Hartselle Tigers.
"This is a huge win for us," Falkville head coach Yancey Randolph said. "There are a 5A school and they have the best defense we have seen this year. This is a great win."
The Tigers lead 32-23 at halftime only to see the Blue Devils begin to charge back. The lead was down to two, when with 45 seconds left when Ryan Summerford tied the game with a jump shot. Summerford led Falkville with 18 points followed by Jonathan Lacey with 13 and
Ross Summerford with 12. Lacey scored all of his points after half time to fuel the Falkville rally. Lacey and Ross Summerford both scored four points in overtime to cap the victory.
Falkville improved to 13-7 on the year while Hartselle slipped to 8-11 on the season. Samuel Massey led Hartselle with 17 points.
Brewer boys 75, Danville 51
The Brewer Patriots advanced to the county finals with a dominating 24-point win over the Danville Hawks. Brewer, whichlead by 41-31 at halftime, blew the game out in the final period with a 23-11 run.
"We just wore them down," Brewer coach Sam Brown said. "We shot the ball pretty well tonight, and we had good intensity on the defensive end."
Austin Mooney led the Patriots, who are now 13-10, with 24 points including six-of-eight shooting behind the three-point line.
Patrick Pinchon led Danville, now 11-11 on the season, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Brewer girls 93, Priceville 46
The Class 5 A Lady Patriots jumped to a 28-8 first period lead in thier semi-final game and easily defeated the Class 2A Lady Bulldogs behind balanced scoring and stifling defense. Six Brewer players finished in double figures on the night.
"We had a great game on offense tonight," Brewer coach Ricky Allen said. "The shots were falling for everyone, I don't think I have ever seen us shoot better."
Heather Gore led Brewer, now 15-6 this season, with 15 points. Nicole Hays and Jessica Thompson followed with 14 points each while Joellen Nay added 13. Whitney Childers and Courtney Scott added 12 each for the Brewer cause.
Priceville, which slipped to 14-6 on the year, was lead by Tiffany Smith with 19 points and Emily Jenkins with 16.
Hartselle girls 55, Falkville 24
The Class 5 A Lady Tigers won their eight straight game with a 31-point win over the 2A Lady Blue Devils in the other girls semi-final game. Freshman Lauren Drake scored 16 points to lead Hartselle while sophomore Shan Jones added 11 more for Hartselle.
The Lady Tigers are now 15-7 on the season after opening with a 7-7 record.
Falkville, which slipped to 5-12 on the year, was lead by senior Megan Wiley with 10 points.
