Music, art events coming in February

By Staff
North Alabama attractions and communities are offering a variety of ways to beat the winter blues this February with offerings including artistic exhibits, stage performances, and flea markets.
Among the February events are:

  • The vocal ensemble Vox Angelica will be featured during the second Music at the Old Country Church series on Feb. 8 at the Madison Baptist Church on the grounds of Burritt on the Mountain in Huntsville. The ensemble will be joined by lutenist Bill Smith and Kevin Lay on viola da gamba. The program is titled "Cupid's Alarm," a set of 16th Century English love songs by John Dowland, Henry Purcell, and Tobias Hume. Admission is $5 in advance and may be purchased at the Burritt Museum Store or charged to a Visa or MasterCard credit card by calling 536-2882. Tickets the day of the concert are $7.50. Concerts start at 3 p.m. and last approximately an hour. For more information, call 536-2882.
A Silver Menagerie: The Betty and Charles Grisham Collection of Buccellati Animals will be showing through April 18. The exhibit features 16 silver animals designed and hand fabricated in Italy by the luxury jewelry firm Buccellati.
Encounters: Jean Hess, showing through May 2, will feature new works by this acclaimed Tennessee artist who uses mixed media on canvas and wood. A Collector's Life, exhibits from the museum's permanent collection, will be on display Feb. 1-April 4. To teach the public more about the art on view at the museum, a guided tour is set for Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. General admission to the museum is $7 with discounts available for groups. Museum members and children under 6 are admitted free. Ages 6-11 are admitted for $3. A discount is given to seniors over 60, military, and students with valid I.D.
