Nick Johnston, Hartselle Enquirer
The Hartselle Tigers won a game and lost two in the SportsMed Shootout during the holiday, but the Lady Tigers faired much better winning four games and losing only one.
The boys started the SportsMed Shootout with an 88-57 loss to Johnson, but bounced back to beat Stanhope-Elmore. Hartselle was knocked out of the tournament by losing to Meridian (Miss.) 63-58.
On the girls side, Hartselle beat West Morgan, Coffee, East Lawrence and Speake, but lost to Hatton.
In boys games…
Johnson 88, Hartselle 57
Head coach Johnny Berry said his team was caught a little wide-eyed with Johnson, as the Jaguars cruised to a win.
Johnson led by as many as 16 in the first quarter before Hartselle made a run to get within nine. However, the Tigers were cold from the field, shooting just 30 percent.
Keith Rodgers led the way with 22 points, while Samuel Massey had 14.
Hartselle 78, Stanhope-Elmore 62
Massey scored 31 points in the win, while Rodgers had 22.
Stanhope-Elmore led 10-3 in the early-goings, but Hartselle ended the first quarter on a 13-2 run, due in part to Massey's three three-pointers. The Tigers led 32-26 at halftime and extended that margin 15 by third quarter's end.
Meridian 63, Hartselle 58
The Tigers nearly came back from 15 points down for the upset, but scored just three points in the final four minutes to lose.
Rodgers scored 21 points for Hartselle (5-3) and Nikita Stover scored 13 points.
In girls games…
Hartselle 73, West Morgan 40
Hartselle outscored West Morgan 20-6 in the third quarter and got the blowout win.
Lauren Drake scored 17 points, Shan Jones notched 16 and 14 rebounds, while Kayla Orr finished with 14 points.
Hartselle 63, Coffee 32
Jones got a triple-double, and held Coffee to 22 percent shooting for the win.
Jones scored 10 points, had 12 rebounds and 10 assists, while Drake scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds.
Jessica Lindsey and Mary Virginia Reeves scored 11 points a piece, and Jessica Andrews added 10 points.
Hartselle 63, East Lawrence 49
According to head coach Greg Adams, "We beat one of the better teams in Class 4A in North Alabama."
The Lady Tigers had four in double figures, with Jones scoring 16, Drake 14, Lindsey 13 and Reeves 10. Jones also had 14 rebounds and seven assists.
Hatton 58, Hartselle 54
