FALKVILLE – Beautiful young ladies, handsome young men and a winning football team. Falkville had it all as they hosted the Cherokee Indians last Friday evening.
The Blue Devils won their second game in a row, beating Cherokee 33-12. Falkville is now 2-2 overall and 2-1 in Class 2A, Region 7 play.
Blake Jump started things off with runs of one, eight and 54 yards ending up on the two-yard line where Ian Thompson ran it in for the first score of the ball game.
The first quarter ended with a 7-0 score, and the second quarter started with the Indians moving the ball from their own 34 to the Blue Devil 34 before the drive stalled and the ball went over the Blue Devils.
After the two teams swapped possessions, Ian Thompson scored again, this time from 84-yards away. Needless to say the "Falkville Faithful" fans in the stands also went into overdrive. The applause and yells were deafening, and less than a minute later, Cody Simpson recovered an Indian fumble.
Shortly thereafter, Blue Devil quarterback Todd Russell pitched back to wide receiver Bobby Holladay who passed 41 yards to Jeff Grandstaff who ended up on the four-yard line. Russell ran it in for the score and also passed to Ian Thompson for the two-point conversion. That ended the scoring for the first half.
During halftime Miss Katie Barnett was crowned 2003 Homecoming Queen. Miss Barnett is the daughter of Don and Lisa Sandlin and Raymond Barnett. Assisting in the crowning was the Senior class president, yearbook co-editor, and Student Council Reporter, Miss Brandy Colwell and Student Council President Miss Allison Saint. Crowing the 2003 Homecoming Queen was Principal, Mrs. Sue Wood.
The Indians got on the scoreboard with 4:40 left in the 3rd quarter. Bently Taylor ran it in from the 12-yard line.
The Indians scored again with 10:21 left in the ball game. Again, Taylor pushed it in from the one-yard line.
With 8:39 left in the game, Justin Cannon snared a pass thrown by the Indian quarterback, Patrick Montgomery. The interception eventually led to another ED for the Blue Devils.
Holladay and Grandstaff added the final two touchdowns of the game for Falkville.
"We've come a long way since the first week of the season," head coach Jeff Miller said. "Now, we're halfway to the playoffs."
