Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
The First Annual Morgan County Weightlifting Championship will take place at 4 p.m. Monday, April 28 at Danville High School.
Brewer, Danville, Falkville, Priceville and West Morgan all have committed to compete in the event, as weightlifters will be competing for gold, silver and bronze medals.
First and second place team trophies, along with "The Strongest Man" (pound per pound) and highest weight total trophies will be presented.
There will be 12 weight classes: 1. 0-130 lb; 2. 131-145 lb; 3. 146-155 lb; 4. 156-165 lb; 5. 166-175 lb; 6. 176-185 lb; 7. 186-195 lb; 8. 196-205 lb; 9. 206-220 lb; 10. 221-235 lb; 11. 236-250 lb; 12. 251-+ lb.
The meet is for students who will be eligible to participate in high school athletics in the 2003-2004 school year. Students graduating in May are not eligible.
Due to time limitations, each is school is limited to three lifters per weight class. Lifters may compete and earn team points in a higher weight class but not in a lower one.
Each lifter is given three attempts on each lift. The highest weight successfully lifted will count as the "max." All three "max's" will be totaled to determine the class winners and team points will be awarded.
Total weight ties in any class will be settled by lifting 50 percent of their bench max as many times as possible.
There will be three different lifts: Bench press, power clean and squat.
In the bench press, it must
be touch and go, feet on the floor and buttocks on the bench. In the power clean, no double bounce is allowed and is lifted straight off the floor. The lifter must break the parallel in the squat. An elastic rope will be set at the top of the lifters' calf to aid in judging the event.
Admission for the event is just $2 per person. Food will be available, as 100 "Buck's Specials" will be served at $7 per plate. The meal includes 1/2 BBQ chicken with baked beans, chips and a drink.
Hot dogs and hamburgers also will be available at the concession stand.
