DA going after bad check writers

By Staff
Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
Bad check writers beware: Morgan County's Worthless Check Unit could be coming out after you.
According to Morgan County District Attorney Bob Burrell, the unit will be participating in the third multi-county roundup of worthless check writers. Burrell is joining district attorneys from Cherokee, Cullman, Dekalb, Jackson, Lawrence, Madison and Marshall counties in tracking down individuals with outstanding warrants for issuing worthless checks.
"We hope that the combined resources of the additional counties will make this a record roundup," Burrell said.
Burrell said he is pleased Morgan County is located in the middle of the roundup areas.
"With our surrounding counties participating, I hope that the benefits to Morgan County's merchants will be greatly increased."
Morgan County was assisted by other counties last year and recovered tens of thousands of dollars for area merchants within a matter of days.
Burrell said new technology would also play an important role in his office's ability to both locate suspects and execute warrants.
"We will be aided by new electronic locator services that will help us find people that we otherwise could not," he said. Burrell said, in most cases, the office would now be able to provide photos to aid officers in executing warrants.
The roundup is scheduled for the first week in March. Anyone who has an outstanding check warrant should contact the Worthless Check Unit at 351-4740 or face arrest.
