By Staff
Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
Hundreds of dedicated American Cancer Society volunteers recently gathered in Montgomery from across the state for the annual Awards Banquet .
The Awards Banquet was held to recognize the outstanding efforts in fund-raising, cancer control and community support throughout Alabama.
During the event, Brewer High School JROTC was awarded a Relay for Life Regional Team Excellence Award for raising $16,969. This award is given annually to Relay For Life teams across the state that raise over $10,000. Additionally, Brewer High School JROTC was honored with the Heart of Relay Youth Outreach award.
This award is given to Relay For Life teams across the nation that have developed innovative and creative practices supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society. The JROTC not only presented colors during the opening ceremony, but they lead the Opening Survivor Lap in full military salute in honor of our participating cancer survivors. Brewer High School's JROTC also played a significant role in the Relay For Life event's set up, clean up and security.
The Brewer High School JROTC is a wonderful representation and an excellent example of the difference youth can make at Relay For Life events.
The group's sergeant also received an award for the individual who raised the most money at Relay For Life in the state. Sgt. Horton single handedly raised $11,356 for the Morgan County Relay For Life in 2002.
Relay For Life is a unique fund-raising event that allows participants from all walks of life to join together to battle cancer and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. It is a fun-filled, overnight event that raised more than $147,200 locally and $245 million nationwide last year.
The American Cancer Society thanks the communities that have taken up the fight against cancer and the volunteers who devote their time, talent and energy to their community through cancer control efforts and Relay For Life events.
