Homecoming not so warm for Falkville

By Staff

It was four plays then a cloud of dust for the Falkville Blue Devils Friday night.
Unfortunately for Falkville, it couldn't find its way through the dust.
After jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first quarter, the Blue Devils allowed visiting Colbert Heights 29 unanswered points and fell 36-22 on homecoming.
A possible reason for the loss is too many missed tackles.
"We have to do a better job tackling," Falkville head coach Jeff Miller said. "And we gotta quit making mistakes. Turnovers are killing us."
Falkville committed four turnovers, including one at the five-yard line on a halfback pass.
That was the unthinkable, perhaps, at the beginning of the contest, when the Blue Devils went 62 yards on four plays for an opening-drive touchdown.
A 33-yard touchdown strike from Bobby Holladay to Corey Simpson capped the drive and gave Falkville a 6-0 lead.
Simpson caught five passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.
Colbert Heights also scored on its first drive and took the lead at 7-6.
That score remained and the Wildcats appeared destined for another score before the Blue Devils forced a fumble at the five-yard line. Simpson recovered the loose ball.
On Falkville's first play from scrimmage after the turnover, though, Steven Holt was tripped up in the endzone and lost control of the ball. Falkville fell on the ball for a safety.
Colbert Heights returned the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to extend the margin. After the extra point, the Wildcats led 18-6.
CHHS scored two more touchdowns early in the second half, putting away the contest with a six-yard touchdown run with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter.
