Amy Keel never expected to be the head volleyball coach at Falkville High School.
But, if you ask her now, she wouldn't have it any other way.
"I'm excited," she said. "It keeps me busy and it has really worked out well for me."
Keel applied to teach Physical Education and being able to coach the volleyball team was an added bonus.
The Hartselle High School and Athens State University graduate played basketball, softball and ran cross-country and track. She never played volleyball, but coaching may be in her bloodline.
"My father was a coach," she said. "He never missed a practice or anything I was involved in. He taught me a lot. I just love coaching – I really do."
Keel said her 2002 squad is young, with only three seniors. But don't think that hasn't kept Keel from setting her sights high.
"I can see us winning the area," she said. "That's our goal. We are going to have a good team."
Keel did not want to single out any one player from the rest.
"They're all good," she said. "And they work their hineys off for me."
Expected to see most of the playing time this season are seniors Allison Livingston, Diana May and Beth Vest; juniors Amanda Holmes, Ashley Williams and Meagan Wiley, and sophomore Katie Childers.
"All seven have equal ability," Keel said. "Nobody's better than the other.
"I really fell into a good team."
Falkville opens up its season at West Morgan September 5 with a three-way match against Mt. Hope and West Morgan.
