Tennis boys finish with wins, Perry qualifies for state

The Hartselle boys' tennis team concluded their regular seasons with wins over Austin and Boaz to finish with a 10-2 record overall. They are undefeated in section play and will take part in the section tournament in Boaz beginning today.
Hartselle's girls' team member Ashley Perry remained undefeated in section play and qualified for the state tournament in Mobile, April 29-30.
In section action, Hartselle's Jessica Lindsey, No. 3 singles, defeated her Athens opponent 10-6 in round one, but was defeated in semi-finals.
Hartselle's No. 1 singles pair of Ashley Perry and Ashley Orr defeated Albertville 10-2 in round one, but lost in semi-final round to Lee High School 10-11 in a 7-4 tiebreaker.
In singles play Perry was seeded No. 1 and drew a first round bye at sectionals.
She then went on to defeat Albertville 10-1 in the semi-finals and Boaz 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the finals to qualify as a wildcard in the state tourney.
Perry's regular season record is 11-0.
Austin took an early lead as they won the doubles matches and claimed a win in the No. 1 singles slot, but solid singles play from Hartselle's rank and file won the day for the Tigers.
Hartselle's No. 1 doubles team of Derek Calvert and Zac Brown defeated the Austin duo of Andy Gonzalez and Carson Lamb 10-8, but the Black Bear pair of Brad Aycock and Kaheru Yoshinaga downed Hartselle's No. 2 team of Britt White and Matt Broom 10-4.
At No. 3 doubles, the Austin team of Arpan Patel and Jay Grisham defeated Hartselle's Jan Hauschild and Jeremy Johnson 10-8 to take a 2-1 lead.
In singles action Gonzalez defeated Brown 10-8 to give Austin a 3-1 team lead.
But Tiger Britt White downed Lamb 10-5. Calvert defeated Aycock 10-2 to draw Hartselle even at 3-3.
At No. 4, Hauschild defeated Yoshinaga 10-8. At No. 5 Grisham downed Hartselle's Johnson 10-3 to knot the tally at 4-4.
The victory went to Hartselle when Matt Broom defeated Patel 11-10 in the No. 6 position.
The Tigers grabbed another close victory when they traveled to Boaz late last week.
At No. 1, Brown defeated Fernando Uscatgui 10-5. White downed Will Brookshire 10-0 at No. 2 and Calvert bested Wesley White 10-3, to give Hartselle a 3-0 lead.
Things changed a bit when Pirate Dustin Castleberry downed Hartselle's Hauschild 10-7 in the No. 4 position.
Pirate Reese Cochran defeated Hartselle's Johnson 10-3 and Austin Ainsworth downed Broom 10-5 at to tie the match at 3-3 going into doubles action.
The Hartselle duo of Brown and Calvert made quick work of the Boaz doubles team of Uzcatgui and White, 10-3.
Hartselle's No. 2 doubles team of White and Broom sealed the victory for the Tigers with a 10-5 win over Cochran and Ainsworth.
The Boaz No. 3 doubles team of Hughes and Amberson pulled out a 7-5 tiebreaker to defeat Tigers Hauschild and Johnson in the final game of the match.
